With the end of Windows 7 support just around the corner (January 14, 2020 to be exact), it’s time to start thinking about finally moving away from your favourite operating system.
End of Windows 7 support won’t mean that Window’s 7 will stop working completely - you will still be able to use it for as long as you like, however, Microsoft will no longer update or support the operating system after the end date.
What does this mean?
The main concern with continuing to use Windows 7 is that it will no longer be patched for any new viruses or security breaches once it enters End of Life, leaving you extremely vulnerable to any emerging threats, bugs, viruses or malicious hackers that will be making the most of this opportunity.
Additionally, if a significant number of people continue to use Windows 7 after the End of Life date, it becomes even more of an incentive for malicious users to target viruses and other threats at Windows 7.
So, while Windows 7 will continue to work after January 14, 2020, it is essential you start planning to upgrade to Windows 10, or an alternative operating system as soon as possible for the safety of your device and your business.
New Software = New Hardware
While Microsoft has done a commendable job of making Windows 10 still be able to run on older hardware, it is still a modern operating system that might struggle to work well on your old Windows 7 device.
Here are the minimum specifications required for Windows 10:
Processor: 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster processor or SoC.
RAM: 1 gigabyte (GB) for 32-bit or 2 GB for 64-bit.
Hard disk space: 16 GB for 32-bit OS 20 GB for 64-bit OS.
Graphics card: DirectX 9 or later with WDDM 1.0 driver.
Display: 800 x 600 resolution
If your Windows 7 device doesn't meet these specifications you won’t be able to run Windows 10 – and even if your device only just meets these requirements, Windows 10 won’t run that well. We recommend at least a 2GHz dual-core processor, 4GB of RAM (8GB ideally) and a 160GB hard drive.
