Understanding Security Clearances.
In Australia, safeguarding classified information under the Protective Security Policy Framework (PSPF) is managed using a strict, multi-agency governance structure. This ensures that only trustworthy individuals can access sensitive government and military assets, including information classified as Protected, Secret and/or Top Secret. Before you can work with classified information, you must be granted one of the four relevant security clearance levels:
- Baseline to access Protected information (Logi-Tech sponsored)
- Negative Vetting Level 1 (NV1) to access Secret information (Logi-Tech sponsored)
- Negative Vetting Level 2 (NV2) to access Top Secret information (Logi-Tech sponsored)
- TS-PA (replacing Positive Vetting (PV)) for Top Secret-Privileged access (Via other sponsoring authority)
The Australian Government Security Vetting Agency (AGSVA) is the primary authorising body that meticulously assesses and grants Baseline, NV1 and NV2 clearances. The Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO) manages the highest tier clearance, Top Secret-Privileged Access (TS-PA).
Individuals cannot legally apply for or purchase a clearance independently. The Department of Defence mandates that applicants be sponsored through its Defence Industry Security Program (DISP).
